Innovating for Sustainability: Butikiro Demonstrates Eco-Friendly Farming Practices

On 29th August, Butikiro Eco Farms in Kyankwanzi District, a proud member of HortiFresh Association, hosted a field demonstration showcasing solar-powered False Codling Moth (FCM) traps and other innovative Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions.
The FCM traps had been installed earlier at the farm, and the demonstration offered farmers a practical opportunity to see how the technology works in managing one of the most destructive pests in horticulture.
A team of agronomists from Van Beek Biologics Ltd led the session, introducing a range of biopesticides, biofungicides, and other eco-friendly pest management products. Drawing on their experience managing avocado farms across the region, the team also demonstrated:
• Safe and proper pesticide application
• Responsible fertilizer use
• Mixing avocado varieties for resilience and higher yields
• Deploying pest-free and environmentally friendly farming practices
This event is part of Butikiro Eco Farm’s commitment to organic and sustainable agriculture. By integrating solar-powered pest traps with biological crop protection solutions, Butikiro Eco Farm continues to reduce its environmental footprint while safeguarding crop productivity.
The initiative reflects a growing movement within Uganda’s horticulture sector toward sustainable, eco-friendly, and competitive farming practices that protect both producers and consumers. With partnerships like Van Beek Biologics and networks like HortiFresh, Butikiro Eco Farm is positioning itself as a leader in demonstrating practical pathways to sustainable agribusiness.
