Kampala, July 29, 2025 – Uganda’s avocado sector is poised for a major leap forward with the official launch of the Uganda Avocado Roadmap 2025-2028 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Kampala. This comprehensive three-year strategy, developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), private sector stakeholders, and the International Trade Centre (ITC) under the EU-funded MARKUP II program, aims to enhance productivity, value addition, and export competitiveness while capitalizing on Uganda’s favourable climate for year-round avocado production.

The roadmap addresses key sector challenges including inconsistent production data, post-harvest losses, and market access barriers through targeted interventions. These include accelerated distribution of certified Hass avocado seedlings at subsidized rates and adoption of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to raise yields and meet global standards. A hub-and-spoke model will link cooperatives and commercial farmers to streamline input access, aggregation, and knowledge sharing, while investments in cold storage solutions and a robust cold chain system will preserve quality for international markets.

To maximize returns, the strategy explores value addition through avocado oil refining and repurposing of by-products like seed husks for animal feed. An avocado export consortium will unify market representation to ensure compliance and strategic promotion abroad. Implementation will be overseen by a dedicated sector platform led by MAAIF and supported by public-private stakeholders, which will coordinate activities, monitor targets, and align policies with investments.

With no EU trade barriers for Ugandan fresh produce, the roadmap positions Uganda to capitalize on the $3 billion global avocado market. By prioritizing traceability, certification, and farmer inclusivity, the initiative aims to boost export volumes, improve livelihoods, and advance the country’s agro-industrialization goals. “This roadmap isn’t just a plan – it’s a pact between farmers, government, and partners to transform Uganda into a top-tier avocado exporter,” remarked a MAAIF representative at the launch.

Backed by international development support, the Uganda Avocado Roadmap 2025-2028 provides a clear, collaborative path to elevate the sector’s global standing, with success hinging on sustained stakeholder engagement and adaptive execution in the coming years.
